Dad Posed as Batman to Help Son Beat Cancer

When your four-year-old is fighting cancer and refuses to eat, sometimes you have to become a superhero.

In 2014, actor Emraan Hashmi's son Ayaan was diagnosed with Wilms' tumor, a rare kidney cancer. At just four years old, Ayaan lost a kidney and faced months of grueling chemotherapy that would challenge anyone, let alone a child too young to understand why he felt so terrible.

Food became the family's daily battle. Doctors explained that strong nutrition was critical to help Ayaan's body withstand the treatment, but getting an exhausted, frightened child to eat inside a hospital room proved nearly impossible. Tantrums and thrown objects became routine as the usual parental coaxing simply stopped working.

That's when Hashmi and his wife Parveen got creative. They saved Hashmi's phone number in Ayaan's device under the name "Batman," complete with a superhero photo. Hashmi would step outside the hospital room and call his son as the caped crusader, urging him to eat.

Because Ayaan adored Batman, he rarely refused the superhero's advice. The simple trick solved their biggest daily challenge during the hardest months of treatment.

Hashmi shared the story years later on a special episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati, describing the period he later chronicled in his book "The Kiss of Life." He wanted other families to know they weren't alone in finding unconventional solutions during impossible times.

Sometimes the most powerful medicine comes wrapped in imagination and love. Hashmi could have forced meals or given up, but instead he met his son in a world where superheroes existed and anything felt possible. That kind of creative problem-solving during crisis shows how parents find strength they never knew they had.

In 2019, Hashmi shared the news every parent fighting alongside their child dreams of hearing. "Today, five years after his diagnosis, Ayaan has been declared cancer-free," he wrote, adding that hope and belief go a long way in fighting disease.
