Darien Little League Wins First State Title Since 1961

After 65 years of waiting, the Darien Little League team finally brought home Connecticut's state championship with a 7-4 victory over Waterford on Sunday.

Hugh Butler became the hero these young players will remember forever. He crushed a solo home run in the first inning to set the tone, then sealed the win with a two-run blast in the fifth.

The game showcased everything great about youth baseball. Johnny Huntington laid down a perfect squeeze bunt with the bases loaded in the first inning, and while the throw beat the runner home, the catcher's foot slipped off the plate. Heads-up baserunning gave Darien an early 3-0 lead.

Luca Hidaka continued the offensive surge in the third inning, ripping a two-run double into the left-center gap. Waterford responded with gritty play, executing a perfect relay to nail a runner at the plate and completing a double play.

But Waterford showed heart when it mattered. James Smith III drove in two runs with a clutch single, and Kevin Shinavar followed with another run-scoring hit down the left field line. When Wyatt Hogarty added a sacrifice fly in the fifth, Waterford had clawed within one run at 5-4.

That's when Butler stepped up again. His second home run of the game pushed the lead back to three runs and gave his teammates the breathing room they needed to close out history.

The Ripple Effect

This victory means more than just a trophy. Darien advances to the Metro Regional tournament for the first time since 1961, giving a new generation of kids the chance to chase bigger dreams. Connecticut Little League is riding momentum after Fairfield National finished third in the world at last year's Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

These young athletes just learned what perseverance looks like. They'll carry this memory of teamwork, clutch performances, and staying composed under pressure for the rest of their lives.
