Two Texas Teens Win National Track Medals in California

Two Texas teenagers proved they can compete with the nation's best throwers, bringing home medals and All-American status from California last week.

Barron Tate, a junior at Midland Classical, launched the discus 172 feet and 8 inches to finish fifth in the boys 17-18 age group at the USATF National Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships. The event took place at Falcon Stadium in Norwalk, California, where hundreds of young athletes competed for national titles.

Tate's top eight finish automatically earned him All-American recognition. The reigning TAPPS 4A state champion also competed in the hammer throw, placing 11th with a distance of 162 feet, 10 inches.

Just one day later, fellow Midland County athlete Braydon Haas stepped into the circle and delivered his own medal-winning performance. The Midland Lee junior threw 150 feet, 3 inches to claim second place in the ages 15-16 boys discus competition.

For Haas, it was his second medal of the week. He had already earned a silver medal in the shot put earlier in the championships, making him a double All-American at just 15 or 16 years old.

The Ripple Effect

These national championships represent more than individual glory. When young athletes from smaller Texas cities compete successfully on the national stage, they inspire younger throwers back home who watch and dream of following in their footsteps.

Both athletes train year-round, balancing schoolwork with countless hours of practice perfecting their technique. Their success shows what's possible when dedication meets opportunity, and when communities support their young athletes' dreams of competing at the highest levels.

The Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships serve as a proving ground for future college athletes and Olympians. Many past competitors have gone on to represent the United States at international competitions, including the Olympic Games.

These two Midland County throwers now join that legacy of excellence, carrying their All-American status into their senior years of high school competition.
