Delhi Launches 5-Day Rescue Drive for 300 Homeless People

Delhi's streets are about to become a little safer for some of its most vulnerable residents.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta launched a five-day rescue campaign on May 11 to help an estimated 300 homeless, sick, and abandoned people living on Delhi's roadsides, pavements, and public spaces. The initiative brings together the Delhi government's Department of Social Welfare and two NGOs, Apna Ghar Ashram and Sewa Bharati, to provide immediate assistance to those who need it most.

Specially equipped ambulances and rescue vehicles are now fanning out across all 13 districts of Delhi. Teams are searching railway stations, bus stands, religious sites, and other public areas for people who have nowhere else to go.

Those rescued get transferred to Apna Ghar Ashram, where they receive medical treatment, nutritious meals, and dignified care. The facility has made arrangements for both immediate emergency care and longer-term rehabilitation support.

The campaign prioritizes people suffering from serious illnesses like tuberculosis, cancer, and AIDS who desperately need medical intervention. Many have been living on the streets without access to treatment, food, or basic shelter for extended periods.

A dedicated 24/7 system ensures smooth coordination between rescue teams and the Social Welfare Department. Twenty people received help in the first phase alone, showing the campaign is already making a real difference.
