Denver Wins 11th Hockey Title, Freshman Goalie Shines

The streets around the University of Denver erupted in celebration Tuesday night as the Pioneers hockey team returned home with their third national championship in five years.

The team captured their 11th national title at the NCAA Frozen Four tournament in Las Vegas, a stunning achievement for a program that regularly competes against larger, wealthier schools. Defenseman Boston Buckberger summed up the team's underdog spirit perfectly at the victory celebration inside Magness Arena.

"It's no secret that we're a smaller school and constantly competing against programs that are bigger and more well-funded than us," Buckberger told the roaring crowd. "However, clearly that doesn't matter because we beat everyone... again."

The real star of the tournament was someone barely old enough to vote. Freshman goalie Johnny Hicks made 50 saves across two tournament games, stopping puck after puck while his team fought their way to the championship.

Hicks' performance earned him Most Outstanding Player honors for the Loveland Regional tournament. The young goalie has been racking up awards all season, including NCHC Rookie of the Week, Goaltender of the Week, and Goaltender of the Month in February.

The celebration drew such massive crowds that Denver police temporarily closed roads near campus. Thousands of fans packed the streets outside Magness Arena, creating a sea of crimson and gold as they cheered for their champions.
