Divers Pull 6 Hours Cleaning Northampton River

Scuba divers hauled shopping carts, car tires, and even a milk churn from the bottom of a river in Northampton, proving that environmental heroes don't always wear capes. Sometimes they wear wetsuits.

Northampton Scuba School organized the six-hour cleanup of the River Nene on September 19th. The team pulled out two shopping trolleys, multiple car tires, an old bike, a drill and charger, and chunks of large debris that had been polluting the waterway.

The divers didn't work alone. Northampton Active loaned two canoes to support the underwater team, while Northampton Canoe and Kayak Club provided a ladder so divers could safely enter and exit the water. Volunteers who preferred dry land joined a litter-picking crew along the riverbank.

Everyone received a safety briefing before diving in. The careful planning paid off with zero injuries and maximum impact.

The Ripple Effect

This cleanup represents more than just one good day on the river. Northampton Scuba School committed to making river cleanups a regular event throughout the year, turning a one-time effort into an ongoing mission.

The sheer volume of waste collected tells an important story about how much work remains. But it also proves that local communities have the power to solve environmental problems when people show up together.

Other local groups are already taking notice. The partnership between the scuba school, rowing club, and activity center shows how different organizations can combine their unique resources to tackle shared challenges.
