Divorce Lawyer Forgives $3,254 Bill for Single Mom

A newly divorced single mom sent a message to her attorney that many people dread: she couldn't pay the full legal bill at once, but wanted to set up a payment plan.

The invoice totaled $3,404. She offered to chip away at it in installments, expecting months or even years of payments ahead.

Her attorney, Joy, had a different idea. "You can just send me $150 to cover the actual expenses like the service, summons, and whatnot, and we'll call it even," she replied.

That $150 covered only the hard costs Joy had already paid out of pocket for filing fees and process servers. Everything else, thousands of dollars of her own billable hours, she wrote off completely.

The client sent the $150 and kept offering to pay more when she could. "You really saved me," she wrote. "I could never repay you for what you have done for me and my family. I aspire to be an attorney with your kind heart when I'm all said and done."

Joy told her the matter was closed. "Go on with your life and do good with you and your kids."
