Miniature schnauzer Koko reunites with owners Gloria Greer and Will Piece at police station

Dog Found 1,000 Miles Away After 2 Years Returns Home

🥲 Tearjerker

A Texas family's miniature schnauzer disappeared nearly two years ago, only to turn up in New Jersey last week thanks to a microchip. Police cared for Koko like family until her overjoyed owners could fly cross-country for an emotional reunion.

Gloria Greer thought she'd never hold her beloved dog Koko again after the miniature schnauzer vanished from their Texas yard in May 2024. Then last week, her phone rang with news that seemed impossible: Koko had been found over 1,000 miles away in Clark, New Jersey.

"I started screaming," Greer said. "We were just in shock."

A good Samaritan spotted Koko wandering the Clark Commons Shopping Center on March 4 and reported her to local police. When officers scanned her microchip, it led them straight to the Greer family in Glenn Heights, Texas.

For nearly two years, Greer and her husband Will Piece had wondered what happened to their dog. They searched desperately after Koko escaped their yard, eventually fearing someone had taken her. "We just prayed that she's safe, she's protected and no one's going to hurt her," Greer said.

While Koko waited for her family, the Clark Police Department made sure she felt loved. Officers walked her, fed her, bathed her, and gave her blankets and toys at the station.

"As a dog lover amongst many other dog lovers, we were not going to make that puppy wait in a shelter or pound," said Police Director Patrick Grady.

Greer and Piece immediately booked flights to New Jersey. Friends and family donated to a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the unexpected travel costs, and the couple flew out to retrieve their long-lost pet.

Sunny's Take

Saturday's reunion at the Clark Police Headquarters brought tears of joy. The moment Koko saw her owners, she recognized them instantly. "I was overjoyed, but it was still that, 'Oh, my God, is this real? Am I really holding my baby again?'" Greer said.

How Koko traveled from Texas to New Jersey remains a mystery, but she arrived in good condition. Back home in Texas, she's already playing with her sister Khloe and acting like her old self.

At nearly seven years old, Koko has kept her gentle, happy personality through whatever journey brought her to New Jersey. She's settling back into family life as if the nearly two years apart never happened.

"We're all happy and it's been wonderful," Greer said. "It is a huge blessing that we got our baby. We never thought we would see the day."
