Dog Swept Away in Flood Rescued After 24-Hour Community Search

A casual evening walk turned into a 24-hour rescue mission when Monchu, a large mixed-breed dog, was swept away by flooding waters in Fletcher, North Carolina, sparking a community-wide search that captivated thousands online.

Sam Haney and his friend Kristen Honeycutt were introducing their dogs at a favorite swimming spot along Cane Creek on May 26 when disaster struck. The water levels were higher than Honeycutt had ever seen them, and within seconds, her dog Ava was caught in the current.

Without thinking, Honeycutt jumped in after her. She was swept 60 to 80 feet downstream in seconds, with two more dogs following behind her, including Monchu.

Honeycutt managed to grab her 85-pound dog Ava and pull both dogs toward a fallen log while fighting the current. Haney pushed through thick brush covered in thorns and poison ivy, racing along the bank to reach them.

After a desperate struggle, they got Ava through a tiny opening in the brush. But when Haney started pulling the dog through, Monchu panicked and vanished back into the rushing water.

The pair rushed the other three dogs to safety, then split up to search. Honeycutt called 911 while Haney ran to a nearby railroad bridge. Within 30 minutes, seven to eight firefighters and first responders arrived to help search.

They scoured the riverbanks until nightfall with no success. Haney went home heartbroken, convinced he'd lost his beloved companion forever.

But the community had other plans. Honeycutt posted about Monchu on social media, and the response was immediate. Some posts received over 10,000 reactions as people shared the story across North Carolina.

The next day, searchers combed miles of riverbank. More than 24 hours after Monchu disappeared, a volunteer finally spotted him, wet and exhausted but alive, clinging to the riverbank downstream.
