$1.8M Funds 700km Water Project Linking Three Nations

Water scarcity across Southern Africa is about to meet an innovative solution that brings three countries together for a common good.

The Southern African Development Community has approved $1.83 million to advance planning for the Lesotho-Botswana Water Transfer Project, a massive undertaking that will pipe water more than 700 kilometers across international borders. The funding comes through a partnership between the German government, KfW, and the Development Bank of Southern Africa.

The money will pay for two essential studies before construction can begin. An environmental and social impact assessment will examine how the proposed dam and pipeline infrastructure will affect communities and ecosystems along the route. A comprehensive feasibility study will tackle the financial, legal, and institutional frameworks needed to keep the project running smoothly for decades.
