$500M Forest Revival to Remove 45M Tonnes of CO₂

A half-billion dollar bet on nature is about to transform millions of acres of scarred American land into carbon-absorbing forests.

Octopus Energy is investing $500 million in reforestation projects across the United States, partnering with Living Carbon to turn degraded landscapes into climate solutions. The initiative targets former mining sites and exhausted farmland where forests can't naturally recover without help.

Over the next 40 years, these restored forests will remove up to 45 million tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. That's equivalent to taking nearly 10 million cars off the road for a year.

"Nature itself is a remarkable force for capturing carbon," says Zoisa North-Bond, CEO of Octopus Energy Generation. "By restoring these ecosystems, we can make a real difference for both rural communities and the climate."

The investment includes an additional $13 million into Living Carbon's carbon removal business, helping scale the technology and expertise needed to rehabilitate land at this magnitude. More than 130 million acres of degraded land across America could benefit from similar restoration.

The Ripple Effect

These projects deliver far more than carbon storage. Rehabilitated forests improve biodiversity, creating habitats for wildlife that disappeared when the land was damaged. Healthier soil means better water systems for surrounding areas. Rural communities gain new economic opportunities through restoration jobs and long-term forest management.

Major tech companies and industry leaders have already signed long-term agreements to support these projects through the Symbiosis Coalition. Their commitments show growing corporate demand for verified, nature-based carbon removal as businesses work toward net zero emissions targets.

"This is a sign that this market is maturing into real project finance," says Maddie Hall, founder and CEO of Living Carbon. The deal represents a shift from experimental projects to large-scale solutions backed by serious institutional investment.

The timing matters. As climate goals tighten and companies seek reliable ways to offset emissions, projects that combine environmental restoration with community benefits are becoming essential infrastructure for a cleaner future.

What started as damaged, unproductive land will become thriving forests that clean the air, support wildlife, and strengthen rural economies for generations.
