Germany Powers Up World's Largest Offshore Wind Farm

Sixty-four giant wind turbines are now spinning in the North Sea, marking a major milestone in Germany's clean energy future. He Dreiht, the country's largest offshore wind farm, celebrated its inauguration last week as it moves toward full operation in the coming months.

The numbers are staggering. Located 50 miles off the German coast, the wind farm will generate 960 megawatts of clean electricity when fully operational. Each turbine stands 142 meters tall with rotors sweeping an area the size of six football fields, and a single rotation produces enough power to run four households for an entire day.

What makes this project truly remarkable is how it came together. Energy company EnBW built He Dreiht without any government subsidies, financing the entire $2.6 billion investment through long-term electricity contracts with major companies. Tech giants Google and Deutsche Telekom signed on, along with transportation leaders Deutsche Bahn and DHL, all seeking stable, clean power to fuel their operations and AI growth.

"We need more projects like He Dreiht, which deliver affordable, secure and clean electricity," said Georg Stamatelopoulos, EnBW's board chairman. Construction launched in May 2024, and workers completed installation of all 64 Vestas turbines in just over two years.

The Ripple Effect

He Dreiht represents more than clean energy. It demonstrates that massive renewable projects can succeed through private investment and corporate partnerships, creating a blueprint other countries might follow.

The wind farm already connects to the grid through undersea cables, with turbines starting up one by one. Germany currently operates 10.8 gigawatts of offshore wind capacity and aims to reach 70 gigawatts by 2045, enough to power tens of millions of homes with ocean breezes.

EnBW isn't stopping here. The company is already developing two more major offshore projects: a 1-gigawatt farm in the German North Sea and a massive 2.9-gigawatt installation off Scotland's coast. By 2030, renewables will make up 80 percent of the company's total energy production, more than tripling their 2018 capacity.

Investment partners including Allianz, Norway's sovereign wealth fund, and AIP Management own nearly half the project, showing strong confidence in offshore wind's financial future. The long-term power contracts give both the energy producer and corporate buyers the price stability they need to plan decades ahead.

As turbines continue connecting to the grid, He Dreiht proves that private enterprise and environmental progress can spin together in perfect harmony.
