$55K Climate Grants Launch for City Innovators Worldwide

Entrepreneurs tackling urban climate challenges just got a major boost. The Swiss Re Foundation launched Shine for Cities 2027, a global program offering grants up to 55,000 Swiss francs (about $61,000) plus expert mentorship to early-stage climate innovators ready to make cities cleaner, safer, and more resilient.

The program spans eight cities across four continents. Chapters in Bangalore, Bratislava, Cape Town, London, Manila, Mexico City, New York, and Zurich will each support local innovators with funding amounts tailored to regional contexts, ranging from $30,000 to the top 55,000 franc grants in Zurich.

Cities account for roughly 75% of global greenhouse gas emissions and house more than half the world's population. By 2050, nearly 70% of people will call cities home, making urban climate solutions essential not optional.

The program focuses on six key areas where innovation can create real impact. Renewable energy, energy storage, and distributed power systems lead the pack, followed by sustainable building retrofits and low-carbon construction materials that reduce emissions from urban infrastructure.

Transportation solutions get attention too. The foundation seeks innovations in low-carbon mobility that give city dwellers cleaner ways to move around while cutting emissions from one of urban areas' biggest pollution sources.

Waste reduction and circular economy models round out the focus areas. Solutions for recycling, resource recovery, and systems that keep materials in use longer all qualify, along with urban nature projects like green infrastructure and climate data tools that help cities track progress and make smarter decisions.

Selected innovators receive more than money. Participants gain access to Swiss Re's expertise in risk assessment and strategy, plus executive coaching designed to strengthen leadership skills and refine business models for scale.

The Ripple Effect

The program addresses a critical gap between planning and action. While many cities have developed climate strategies, implementing them remains challenging due to resource constraints and complexity.

By supporting entrepreneurs at the validation stage, Shine for Cities helps proven ideas cross the gap between concept and widespread adoption. Successful ventures may even receive follow-up investment from the foundation after demonstrating impact, creating a pathway from startup to scale.

The timing matters. Cities face mounting pressure from extreme heat, flooding, and resource scarcity while residents demand solutions that improve daily life alongside cutting emissions.
