Dr. Alveda King Leads Juneteenth Unity Event at Kennedy Center

A free evening of music and hope is coming to our nation's capital this Juneteenth, and everyone's invited.

Dr. Alveda King will lead a Celebration of Freedom, Unity and Gratitude at the Kennedy Center in Washington on June 20 at 6 p.m. The event marks Juneteenth, the federal holiday recognizing the end of slavery in America.

"Juneteenth is an opportunity for all Americans to celebrate freedom, remember our shared history, and embrace our common future," said King, niece of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. She's channeling her uncle's vision that we're stronger when we recognize our common humanity.

The evening promises musical performances ranging from "Lift Every Voice and Sing" to "America the Beautiful." Spoken word performances and historical reflections will weave through the program, creating space for both celebration and remembrance.

King will also debut a new song called "Happy Birthday USA," written specifically to help unify the country. The finale aims to leave attendees with a message of hope for America's shared future.

Organizers are honoring military veterans and community leaders throughout the night. They'll recognize Americans who've made contributions across education, entrepreneurship, science, agriculture, the arts, and public service.
