Dubai Launches $13K Film Contest Celebrating Unity

Dubai wants to celebrate the stories that matter most: how people come together when it counts.

The Dubai Films and Games Commission just launched "Stories of Our Determination," a national short film competition inviting filmmakers across the UAE to showcase moments of unity, strength, and hope. Whether you're a student with a smartphone or a seasoned professional with a full production crew, this competition welcomes your voice.

The initiative comes from Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Media Council. It's designed to spotlight the human experiences that define a nation's character during testing times.

Filmmakers can submit work in any format: fiction, documentary, animation, experimental, AI-generated, or even mobile phone films. The competition recognizes 10 awards across five categories, including a Grand Jury Prize and specialized awards for Best Fiction, Documentary, Animated, and AI Film.

Professional winners can earn up to 50,000 dirhams (about $13,600), while student filmmakers receive 10,000 dirhams ($2,700). But beyond the prize money, participants gain something equally valuable: a platform to reach audiences across diverse cultures and nationalities.

The competition centers on four themes that capture different aspects of resilience. "Those Who Protected Us" honors emergency responders and frontline workers. "One Nation, Many Communities" celebrates how people of different backgrounds united during challenges.

"Life Continued" highlights the determination to move forward, while "Stronger Toward the Future" focuses on hope and ambition. These themes create space for filmmakers to explore what unity actually looks like in action.

Aspiring filmmakers have until October 25 to submit their entries. After that, a three-stage judging process begins with technical evaluation, followed by preliminary selection, jury review, and public voting.

The Ripple Effect

This competition does more than award talented filmmakers. It creates a living archive of resilience, documenting how communities respond to adversity with creativity and courage.

The 55 films selected for the official screening will mark the UAE's 55th Eid Al Etihad, turning personal stories into a collective celebration. For students especially, this represents hands-on exposure to creative production techniques and a chance to earn recognition early in their careers.

The competition culminates in a gala screening and awards ceremony, giving filmmakers the opportunity to see their work appreciated on a big screen alongside peers who share their passion for storytelling.

Dubai is betting that the best stories of who we are come not from professional marketing campaigns, but from real people capturing real moments of connection and hope.
