UAE Secures $5B for World's First 24/7 Solar Power Plant

The United Arab Emirates just solved one of clean energy's biggest problems: keeping the lights on after sunset.

Abu Dhabi-based developer Masdar secured $5.1 billion in financing to build what they're calling the world's first gigascale 24/7 renewable energy project. A consortium of 13 international and local banks, including HSBC, Standard Chartered, and BNP Paribas, backed the historic deal that reached financial close this month.

The project solves a puzzle that has limited solar power for decades. Traditional solar farms go quiet at night, but this facility pairs a massive 5.2 gigawatt solar array with a 19 gigawatt-hour battery storage system that stockpiles sunshine during the day and releases it after dark.

The result? One full gigawatt of continuous clean power flowing into the grid every hour of every day. That's enough electricity to power hundreds of thousands of homes without burning a single drop of oil.

Masdar broke ground on the Abu Dhabi site in October 2025, working alongside Emirates Water and Electricity Company. The $6.1 billion project includes $1 billion in equity from Masdar, with the rest coming from the international banking package.

"This significant financing commitment demonstrates the confidence of the international banking community not only in a landmark project but also in Masdar's financial strength," said Mazin Khan, Masdar's Chief Financial Officer. The plant is expected to become operational in 2027.

The Ripple Effect

This project represents more than just clean energy. It proves that renewable power can finally compete with fossil fuels on reliability, the one advantage oil and gas have held for over a century.

When complete, the facility will rank among the largest solar and battery storage projects on Earth. More importantly, it creates a blueprint other nations can follow to build their own 24/7 renewable systems.

The international banking support signals growing confidence that clean energy projects can deliver both environmental wins and solid financial returns. Thirteen major banks don't commit $5 billion unless they see a viable path forward.

By 2027, Abu Dhabi will prove that the sun never has to set on solar power.
