
Dutch Breakthrough Could Boost Chip Production 50% by 2030

Scientists at a Dutch company just achieved something that seemed nearly impossible: they doubled the power output of the machines that create every advanced computer chip on Earth.
ASML, based in the Netherlands, is the only company in the world that makes extreme ultraviolet lithography equipment. These machines are essential for manufacturing the processors inside your phone, laptop, and nearly every modern device.
The team at ASML's California research center near San Diego increased the light source power from 600 watts to 1,000 watts. That might sound technical, but here's what it means for everyday life: chips can be made faster, which means they cost less to produce.
"It's not a parlor trick," explained Michael Purvis, who leads the light technology development team. "It's a system that can produce 1,000 watts under all the same requirements that you could see at a customer."
The process works like high-tech photography. The machines shoot tiny droplets of liquid tin into a chamber, then blast them with powerful lasers. This creates temperatures hotter than the sun's surface, generating special light that prints patterns onto silicon wafers.

The breakthrough involved doubling the tin droplet frequency to roughly 100,000 per second while using two smaller laser pulses instead of one. Jorge Rocca, a Colorado State University professor who has mentored several ASML researchers, called the achievement "pretty amazing."
By 2030, chip manufacturers should be able to process about 330 silicon wafers per hour, up from 220 today. Each wafer can contain dozens to thousands of chips, depending on size.
The Ripple Effect
This advancement comes at a critical time when chip demand continues to grow worldwide. Companies like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing and Intel will benefit from faster, more affordable production.
The technology is so valuable that it has become central to international competition, with both Republican and Democratic administrations working to protect American access to these machines.
But ASML isn't stopping at 1,000 watts. Purvis says the team sees "a reasonably clear path toward 1,500 watts, and no fundamental reason why we couldn't get to 2,000 watts."
The future of technology just got brighter, one tiny droplet of superheated tin at a time.
