Dutch Courts Give Neighbors Right to Know Pesticide Use

Two separate court rulings just gave Netherlands communities the legal right to know exactly which pesticides farmers use on nearby land. Farmers already keep detailed spray registers by law, but until now, that information stayed locked away from neighbors and local families.

Last July, 35 residents in the Limburg village of Sevenum won a separate court battle to ban lily cultivation near their homes. Lily farming requires heavy pesticide use, which judges determined posed serious risks to vulnerable groups like children and the elderly.

That ban stays in effect through 2028, giving one community breathing room. Now these new transparency rulings give all Dutch residents a tool they never had before.
