Dutch Wind Farm Will Power 1 Million Homes by 2028

Construction crews have planted the first giant foundation for what will become one of the Netherlands' largest offshore wind farms, marking the beginning of a renewable energy project that could transform how a million Dutch households get their electricity.

The OranjeWind wind farm hit a major milestone this month when workers installed the first of 53 massive steel monopiles into the North Sea floor, 53 kilometers off the coast of IJmuiden. Each foundation stands 90 meters tall and 8 meters wide, roughly the height of a 30-story building.

Energy giants RWE and TotalEnergies are partnering on the 795-megawatt project, which should be fully operational by early 2028. The timeline puts all 53 foundations in place by early 2027, followed by turbine installation throughout that year.

What makes this project special goes beyond its size. Engineers designed the foundations without traditional transition pieces, meaning turbines bolt directly onto the steel columns. This clever design cuts down significantly on the amount of steel needed for construction.

The installation vessel itself represents a leap forward in sustainable construction. The Les Alizés operates as an Ultra-Low Emissions Vessel, equipped with advanced systems that slash nitrogen oxide and fine particle pollution far beyond standard requirements.

The Ripple Effect

The project team is taking extra steps to protect ocean wildlife during construction. Workers create a "bubble curtain" around each installation site by pumping compressed air through hoses, forming a wall of bubbles that absorbs and deflects the loud hammering sounds that could harm marine animals. The team continuously monitors noise levels outside the curtain to ensure they stay within safe limits.

TotalEnergies plans to use some of the wind farm's electricity to produce green hydrogen for its Northern European refineries, directly replacing fossil fuels in its own operations. This approach shows how renewable energy projects can create cascading benefits beyond just powering homes.

The foundations are making a short journey from Rotterdam's Maasvlakte terminal to their offshore home, traveling less than 60 kilometers. A 5,000-tonne crane extending 160 meters lifts each monopile into position before hydraulic hammers drive them deep into the seabed.

When complete, OranjeWind will generate enough clean electricity annually to match the consumption of one million Dutch households, a significant contribution to the Netherlands' renewable energy goals.
