Dutch Stadium Debuts AI Bar That Skips Checkout Lines
Soccer fans at Amsterdam's Johan Cruijff ArenA can now grab drinks without waiting in checkout lines, thanks to new AI technology that automatically charges their phones. Over 12,000 fans already tested the system during concerts, buying more than 17,000 beverages.
Missing half the game because you're stuck in line for a beer might soon be a thing of the past.
Amsterdam's Johan Cruijff ArenA just became the first stadium in the Netherlands to launch a checkout-free bar. Fans simply tap their smartphone at the entrance, grab their drinks, and walk out while AI cameras track what they picked up and charge them automatically.
The technology made its soccer debut during an Ajax match in late July. But it wasn't a blind leap into the future.
Working with Levy Europe, the stadium's catering partner, the ArenA quietly tested the system during concert season first. More than 12,000 music fans passed through the high-tech kiosk, purchasing over 17,000 beverages without a single traditional checkout.
The new Bar14 sits on the stadium's Second Ring on the east side. Fans tap their phone to enter, cameras and sensors track which drinks they pick up, and payment happens automatically as they leave with their beverages.

"We never settle for how things have always been done," says Rak Kalidas, Chief Creative Officer at Levy. "Our checkout-free technology gives fans back precious time to enjoy the occasion."
The Ripple Effect
This isn't just about faster beer runs. The technology represents a shift in how we think about large-venue experiences, where every minute counts and missing a key moment can ruin the day.
For parents juggling snacks for kids, for fans who want to catch every play, or for anyone who's ever done the math on whether a drink is worth missing 15 minutes of action, this changes the equation. The technology turns a 10-minute errand into a 2-minute pit stop.
The Netherlands joins a small but growing list of venues worldwide embracing this approach. Similar systems have appeared in select stores and airports, but stadiums present unique challenges with their massive crowds and tight time windows.
Every innovation that gives people more time to connect with the experience they paid for feels like a win worth celebrating.
