Eckerd College Students Present 83 Research Projects

😊 Feel Good

A Florida college celebrated student achievement across every field from marine biology to Shakespeare. The inaugural Student Showcase Week gave dozens of undergrads their first chance to present research to industry leaders.

Students at Eckerd College in Florida just wrapped up a week that proved liberal arts education creates real-world skills worth celebrating.

The college's inaugural Student Showcase Week brought together 83 research projects spanning eight disciplines, from studying hummingbird behavior to analyzing climate fiction. The April 20-24 event marked the first time the school consolidated research presentations, art exhibitions, study abroad showcases, and theater performances into one celebratory week.

For many students, the spotlight meant conquering first-time jitters. Mia Henrich, a senior studying literature and environmental studies, says presenting her research on authors like William Faulkner and Toni Morrison was nerve-wracking but ultimately reminded her why she loves her field. "I loved hearing everybody's research," she said, noting projects ranged from 1900s literature to modern climate fiction.

The week's centerpiece, the 19th Annual Research Symposium, drew an audience beyond campus walls. Industry leaders from organizations including NOAA, Mote Marine Laboratory, and Zoo Tampa attended an inaugural luncheon before viewing student presentations.

The Ripple Effect

Dwayne Peterson, director of the College Career Center, says bringing industry professionals to campus changes the game for students. "This kind of exposure is great for students, helping them see that their academic work translates to careers," he explained. Students networked with potential employers while demonstrating skills that go beyond any interview.

The week also gave study abroad participants a platform to share international experiences through photos, videos, and stories. Laura Semenow, executive director of global education, notes prospective students learned about upcoming opportunities and scholarships available to them.

Winning projects tackled pressing questions like how sea surface temperature affects coral growth, whether gopher tortoises stay active at night, and how native plants can restore local ecosystems. Student artwork filled the Cobb Gallery while others performed "Twelfth Night" and orchestra concerts, showcasing talents that extend far beyond laboratory benches.

Associate Dean Kat Robinson says the goal was making student skills "visible and meaningful" across all forms of liberal arts education, and the packed week delivered exactly that.
