Eco-Friendly Drone Cleaner Protects Crops and Solar Panels

Farms that combine solar panels with crops now have a safer way to keep their energy systems clean without harming what grows underneath.

Portuguese company Chemitek Solar developed a water-based cleaning solution designed for drone systems to wash solar panels on agrivoltaic farms. These dual-use farms install solar arrays high enough for crops to grow in the shade below, creating a balance between food production and renewable energy.

The challenge has always been maintenance. Traditional cleaning chemicals can damage crops or contaminate soil when they drip down from overhead panels. Manual cleaning often isn't practical when panels sit above active farmland.

Chemitek's new Drone AgroPV Cleaning Agent tackles both problems. The formula is completely biodegradable, non-toxic, and safe for plants, soil, and water runoff. It effectively removes bird droppings, agricultural dust, and organic residues that naturally accumulate on panels in farm settings.

The cleaning process is straightforward. Farmers dilute the solution at a 1:50 ratio with water, then use any drone equipped with a spraying system to apply it to the solar modules. After spraying, the panels get a simple water rinse to wash away loosened dirt.

The product launches in June and works with any standard drone spraying system, meaning farmers don't need specialized equipment. This accessibility could make regular maintenance more affordable for smaller operations trying to maximize both energy generation and crop yields.

This innovation arrives as agrivoltaic farms gain momentum worldwide. These systems help address two pressing needs at once: expanding renewable energy while preserving valuable farmland for food production. Studies show many crops actually thrive in the partial shade solar panels provide, using water more efficiently while staying cooler during heat waves.

But dirty solar panels can lose 20% or more of their energy output, cutting into the economic benefits that make these farms viable. A safe, effective cleaning method removes a major operational headache and helps these dual-purpose farms reach their full potential.

As more farmers explore agrivoltaics, solutions like this make the technology more practical and sustainable. What works in Portugal could soon help farms from California to Kenya produce both food and clean energy more efficiently.
