Edinburgh Woman Turns 105, Gets Cards from 105 Countries

When Mary Davidson Smith turned 105 this July, she received birthday wishes from Singapore to Scotland, totaling exactly 105 cards from across the globe.

The Edinburgh resident celebrated at her care home, Murrayside, with afternoon tea and a special family gathering. She joked about her birthday cake, saying she was grateful there weren't 105 candles because she didn't have enough breath for that.

Born in Korea, Mary lived a remarkable life that spanned continents. She spent her youth in England, Canada, and the United States before joining the Royal Navy.

While posted in Washington DC, she met her future husband Charles, a British Army officer. The couple settled in Edinburgh, where they raised two sons and she now enjoys four grandchildren.

Mary holds a rare distinction: she's received birthday cards from both the late Queen Elizabeth and King Charles. The care home made an appeal for cards, and well-wishers from around the world responded enthusiastically.

When asked about her secret to longevity, Mary's answer was refreshingly simple. "I enjoy it – keep on going," she said, adding that she comes from a long line of family members who lived long lives.

Mary stays active at Murrayside, participating in outdoor activities, church events, quizzes, and singing sessions. She regularly joins friends for coffee mornings and never misses a chance to share stories from her extraordinary journey.

Recently, she reunited with a traditional Korean outfit she wore nearly 100 years ago during a private tour at the National Museum of Scotland. The hanbok, comprising a hat, bag, and wraparound jacket, represented a touching connection to her earliest memories.

Home manager Suzanne Welsh praised Mary as a beloved resident who brings joy to everyone around her. "Mary is a huge part of the Murrayside family," she said, celebrating the successful card campaign that brought so much happiness.

Mary has already made plans for her 106th birthday: she hopes to celebrate with a good strong whisky.
