Edo Wins 111 Medals, Breaks 24-Year Sports Drought

After nearly a quarter century without a major sporting title, Team Edo finally brought the trophy home with a commanding performance that surprised even seasoned sports fans.

The host state captured 52 gold, 34 silver, and 25 bronze medals at the second Niger Delta Games, securing first place overall. Delta State finished second with 102 total medals, while defending champions Bayelsa placed third with 75.

The week-long competition brought together over 3,000 athletes from nine Niger Delta states competing in 16 different sports. The Niger Delta Development Commission sponsored the event, which was designed to discover new talent and build regional unity through friendly competition.

Edo's Sports Commission Chairman Desmond Enabulele credited the state's governor for the breakthrough victory. He said intentional investments in athlete welfare, coaching quality, and training facilities created the foundation for success after years of disappointment.

"Breaking a 24-year jinx is not a coincidence," Enabulele explained. "It is the product of intentional leadership, disciplined preparation, and the resilience of our athletes."

The final day brought dramatic relay races that kept crowds on their feet. Delta State claimed gold in three of four relay finals, including both the men's and women's 4x100m races, plus the women's 4x400m where they overtook Akwa Ibom in the final stretch.

The Ripple Effect

Olympic legends Mary Onyali and Olumide Oyedeji praised organizers for creating what they called a world-class competition capable of producing Nigeria's next generation of champions. Both athletes emphasized that the Niger Delta region holds incredible sporting potential waiting to be unlocked.

The discovery of new talent matters beyond the medal count. Young athletes from nine states now have proof that dedication and proper support can transform dreams into reality, regardless of how long the drought has lasted.
