Lagos Hosts 14,000 Young Athletes at EKO 2026 Games

Nigeria is getting ready to spotlight its next generation of sports stars with a brand new national competition designed just for young athletes.

The National Intermediate Games, called EKO 2026, will take place in Lagos from October 1 to 15 this year. More than 14,000 young athletes from across Nigeria will compete in what organizers are calling a game changer for discovering and developing talent.

Bukola Olopade, Director General of the National Sports Commission, praised Lagos State for stepping up to host the inaugural event. He pointed to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's track record with sporting events like the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon as proof the state can pull it off.

The games specifically target secondary school athletes, giving young people a national stage to showcase their abilities. Olopade recalled watching impressive performances at recent competitions in Asaba and Abeokuta, noting that many talented young athletes are waiting for exactly this kind of opportunity.

Lagos has already started putting the necessary systems and facilities in place for the games. The state government's commitment to sports development and youth empowerment has impressed national officials who believe this event can become a permanent fixture on Nigeria's sporting calendar.
