Educator Mercy Rao Honored After 48 Years at Timpany

For 48 years, Miss Mercy Jeyaraja Rao walked the halls of Timpany School, transforming from a young teacher into a beloved mentor who shaped generations of students in her city.

Born in 1930, Miss Mercy began her journey at Timpany School in 1954. She would spend the next half century there, rising through the ranks from teacher to Headmistress, Principal, and finally Executive Director before retiring in 2002.

Her impact reached far beyond lesson plans and report cards. Students who sat in her classrooms decades ago still remember her dedication, her wisdom, and her unwavering commitment to their growth. Many of those former students, now adults with families of their own, credit Miss Mercy with helping them become who they are today.

She passed away on March 22 at the age of 95, leaving behind a legacy that spans multiple generations. Her life's work touched hundreds, possibly thousands, of young people who walked through Timpany's doors.

On April 6 at 6 p.m., the school will host a memorial gathering at its C.B.M. Compound campus. Former students, faculty members, and community members from across the city are expected to attend, each carrying their own memories of how Miss Mercy influenced their lives.
