Egypt Celebrates 1,000 Couples in Mass Wedding Initiative

A thousand couples in Egypt started their married lives together this week with help from a government program making weddings more affordable for young people struggling financially.

Egypt's First Lady Entissar al-Sisi attended the "Egypt's Joy" celebration on Monday, where 1,000 couples tied the knot in a mass ceremony. The Ministry of Social Solidarity created an online platform where young men and women can register for the "Facilitating Marriage" initiative, which provides financial support to those living near the poverty line.

Wedding costs have become a major barrier for young Egyptians wanting to marry. Traditional celebrations, housing expenses, and cultural expectations around gold jewelry and furnishings can make marriage financially out of reach for many couples.

The First Lady shared her joy on social media, writing that she felt like a mother watching her daughter get married. "You are all like my daughters, and I feel even more joy sharing this beautiful moment with you," she told the couples.

The celebration went beyond just paperwork and formalities. Artists Ahmed Saad and Boussy performed alongside the Reda Folkloric Dance Troupe and the National Folkloric Troupe, creating a festive atmosphere for the newlyweds.

This initiative does more than help individual couples afford their weddings. By removing financial barriers to marriage, the program addresses a significant social challenge facing young Egyptians and helps them build stable futures together.
