Egypt Hits 99% Water Access, Opens Investment Summit

Egypt just achieved something remarkable: nearly every person in the country now has access to clean drinking water, a feat officials celebrated this week while inviting the world to learn from their success.

The Arab-African Exhibition and Conference for Investment in Water and Energy opened Monday in Cairo, bringing together government leaders, private companies, and researchers from across two continents. Deputy Housing Minister Ahmed Omran shared stunning numbers that show what's possible with focused effort. Egypt's drinking water coverage reached 99% nationwide in 2026, with production capacity hitting 31.7 million cubic meters daily. Combined urban and rural wastewater coverage now stands at 70%, a dramatic improvement that protects both public health and the environment.

The country didn't stop at traditional water sources. Egypt built seawater desalination capacity to nearly 2.1 million cubic meters per day, providing fresh water where none existed before. The nation now operates 621 wastewater treatment plants with a combined capacity of 19 million cubic meters daily, turning a former challenge into a resource.

Egypt treats water access as a matter of national security, strengthening laws and institutions to balance service quality with long-term sustainability. The government established a Public-Private Partnership Unit specifically to attract investment in desalination, water reuse, and related industries that can be manufactured locally.
