Egypt Opens Holy Family Trail Site in Minya

A dream decades in the making became reality this week when Pope Tawadros II helped inaugurate the Kom Maria project in Mallawi, a city in Egypt's Minya Governorate. The site represents the first completed phase of a larger effort to restore and celebrate the Holy Family Trail, the route tradition says Mary, Joseph, and Jesus traveled through Egypt.

Pope Tawadros II, leader of the Coptic Orthodox Church, called the moment a turning point for the region. He praised the project for honoring the trail's religious, historical, and cultural importance while creating new opportunities for visitors and residents alike.

The ceremony brought together religious and government leaders, including Minya Governor Emad Kedwani and Bishop Demetrius. Pope Tawadros thanked President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi for supporting projects that serve all Egyptians, regardless of faith.

Governor Kedwani highlighted how the Coptic Church has become a vital partner in community development across Minya. Beyond spiritual leadership, church-affiliated institutions run three major hospitals serving the region: Misr Al-Mahabba Hospital in Beni Mazar, Al-Ragaa Hospital in Abu Qurqas, and Al-Raai Al-Saleh Hospital in Samalout.

All three hospitals recently earned accreditation to join Egypt's Universal Health Insurance System. That means more residents will have access to quality healthcare closer to home.

The Kom Maria project does more than preserve history. It creates jobs, attracts visitors interested in religious tourism, and gives the people of Mallawi a source of pride in their community's unique heritage.
