Egypt Trains 2,700+ Students in AI Since 2022

Egypt is turning its university students into AI innovators at a scale that keeps growing every year.

The country's Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and Ministry of Higher Education concluded the fourth edition of their Universities Capacity Building in Artificial Intelligence Initiative on Tuesday. Since launching in 2022, the program has trained more than 2,700 students and supported 763 AI projects across Egyptian universities.

This year's edition brought together 1,090 students from 10 universities who developed 445 AI projects in partnership with Dell Technologies. The numbers tell a story of momentum: participation keeps climbing as word spreads about the program's connection to real job opportunities.

The initiative culminated in an AI hackathon where 21 teams tackled renewable energy challenges. A team called Hacktastic from Ain Shams University took first place, showing how student creativity can address Egypt's pressing environmental needs.

Minister of Communication and Information Technology Raafat Hendi said the growing university participation proves that government, schools, and businesses can work together successfully. The program specifically focuses on Arabic-language AI solutions, ensuring the technology serves local communities in ways that matter.

Minister of Higher Education Abdel Aziz Konsowa emphasized that digital transformation across universities isn't just about teaching coding. It's about applied research and innovation that students can use the day they graduate.

The Ripple Effect

Egypt's approach shows how national AI strategies can create practical pathways for young people. Instead of abstract computer science lectures, students build actual projects that could become startups or land them jobs. The focus on renewable energy in this year's hackathon means student innovation directly supports Egypt's climate goals.

The program also strengthens Arabic-language AI development, which matters for the 400 million Arabic speakers worldwide who deserve technology in their native language. Every trained student becomes someone who can build AI tools that work for their community's specific needs.

By linking academic learning with labor market demands, Egypt is solving two problems at once: youth unemployment and the shortage of AI talent. Universities become innovation hubs rather than just degree factories.
