Egypt's Suez Canal Zone Sees 300% Container Surge

Egypt's Suez Canal Economic Zone just proved it's becoming the Mediterranean's shipping powerhouse, with container traffic at one terminal skyrocketing 301% in a single year.

The numbers tell a story of remarkable momentum. West Port Said processed 451,600 container units this fiscal year, nearly quadrupling its previous volume. East Port Said handled 5.9 million containers, up 41% from last year.

The growth isn't just about moving boxes. These ports are absorbing global supply chain disruptions and keeping goods flowing when the world needs reliability most. Nearly all of East Port Said's traffic involves transferring cargo between ships, making it a critical connection point for international trade.

The zone is investing heavily to keep the momentum going. Workers are extending dock space at West Port Said to 670 meters, upgrading digital systems, and modernizing fire safety and electrical grids. The second phase of construction is already 60% complete for core infrastructure.

Ships are also refueling there in record numbers. The ports supplied 1.25 million tons of marine fuel this year, a 65% increase that served over 2,200 vessels. That's 83% more ships stopping to refuel than the previous year.

The Ripple Effect

This growth means more than impressive statistics for Egypt. Thousands of jobs support these expanding operations, from crane operators to IT specialists to dock workers. Local communities benefit as the ports hire, train, and create opportunities in a region that's becoming a genuine competitor to European shipping hubs.

The expansion also helps global consumers. More efficient Mediterranean shipping means products move faster and cheaper between Asia, Africa, and Europe. When supply chains work smoothly, everyone from manufacturers to shoppers benefits from lower costs and better availability.

SCZone Chairperson Mostafa Sheikhoun says the results prove these ports can handle whatever global shipping throws at them. While other routes face disruptions, the Suez Canal zone keeps growing.
