Eight Pit Bulls Rescued from Abandoned Tennessee Property
A neighbor's call saved eight pit bulls from neglect in Jackson, Tennessee, including two puppies found chained and malnourished. Now they're getting medical care and a second chance at life.
When a concerned neighbor noticed nobody caring for dogs at a Jackson, Tennessee property for several days, that one call set in motion a rescue that saved eight lives.
Animal Rescue Corps, a national nonprofit, partnered with local police on April 9 to rescue eight pit bulls from dangerous conditions. Two puppies were discovered inside the abandoned house, while three adults were chained in the yard and three more trapped in wooden hutches.
The dogs showed heartbreaking signs of long-term neglect. They were underweight and dehydrated, with broken teeth and skin lesions from exposure to the elements. No food was found anywhere on the property, and the only available water was contaminated.
Local animal control called in Animal Rescue Corps because the Jackson shelter didn't have space for all eight dogs at once. Without that partnership, the animals would have continued deteriorating, potentially facing death from starvation and neglect.
Officials suspect the property owner was breeding dogs with possible ties to dog fighting. "This individual was breeding dogs and we suspect a possible connection to dog fighting," said Whitney Owen, Director of Animal Services. "We've worked with ARC before and are very happy to have their help today."
The rescued dogs were immediately transported to the ARC Rescue Center outside Nashville. There, they're receiving comprehensive veterinary care, vaccinations, medical treatment for their injuries, nutritious meals, and safe shelter for the first time in who knows how long.
The Ripple Effect
This rescue shows what happens when communities look out for animals who can't speak for themselves. One neighbor's vigilance sparked action from multiple agencies working together to save lives. Animal Rescue Corps has been providing this kind of large-scale rescue support since 2010, stepping in when local communities lack the resources to address serious abuse cases.
The organization offers emergency rescue, education, and shelter relief across the country. In 2025, Executive Director Tim Woodward was honored as a CNN Hero and selected as one of five finalists for CNN Hero of the Year.
All eight dogs are now on the path to recovery, transforming from victims of neglect into survivors ready for loving homes.
