Elderly Alpaca Gets Mirror Friend After Losing Companions

When Giovanni the alpaca lost his two companions at a sanctuary in Cornwall, his caregivers knew they had to act fast to help the grieving 18-year-old feel less alone.

Staff at the Screech Owl Sanctuary & Animal Park in St Columb came up with a creative temporary solution. They installed mirrors around Giovanni's enclosure so he could see his own reflection and feel the presence of another alpaca.

"We just wanted to get some mirrors up as a temporary situation just to help him feel a little bit less isolated," operations director Gary Zammit told the BBC. The sanctuary posted a request on Facebook asking for donated mirrors, and the response surprised everyone.

The community donated so many mirrors that staff could place them in multiple spots around Giovanni's space. According to Zammit, the elderly alpaca seemed more content almost immediately, appearing to recognize another alpaca in his reflection.

Giovanni's story touched hearts far beyond Cornwall. The sanctuary's simple Facebook post sparked an outpouring of support from people who understood what it means to care for animals in need.

Sometimes the most creative solutions come from the simplest acts of compassion. While mirrors can't replace real companionship, they gave Giovanni comfort during a difficult transition.

The best news is still ahead. A regular sanctuary visitor stepped forward to donate two female alpacas who will become Giovanni's new companions once they complete the required health tests and quarantine period.

"We would hopefully be looking at picking them up as soon as possible," Zammit said. "Once all the tests are done, quarantine won't take long at all."

Giovanni won't have to rely on his reflection much longer.
