Chinese automaker BYD slashed the price of its Atto 1 Essential to $19,990 Australian dollars (about $14,000 USD), making it Australia's cheapest new car overall. The price includes all mandatory fees, eliminating the hidden costs that typically push budget vehicles higher.

This beats the previous cheapest option, the manual Kia Picanto Sport, which starts at $19,190 Australian dollars but climbs higher once required on-road costs get added. The timing couldn't be more significant for electric vehicle adoption.

Electric cars recently outsold petrol vehicles for the first time in Australia, capturing nearly 25 percent of all new car sales in August. That's a 171 percent jump compared to last year, with EVs individually beating petrol, diesel, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid sales across the country.

BYD became Australia's second most popular automaker, trailing only Toyota and edging ahead of Tesla. The company's success reflects a broader shift in how Australians view transportation costs.

"Australians have seen through the scare campaigns and are voting with their wallets for cars that are cheaper to run, cleaner, and reduce their exposure to international petrol prices shocks," said Australia's Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen.
