Electric Car Prices Drop as Gap with Gas Cars Hits Record Low

New data from Kelley Blue Book shows the average electric vehicle sold for $55,300 in February, down from both last year and January. Meanwhile, gas-powered car prices inched upward, shrinking the gap between the two to just $6,500. That's one of the smallest differences ever recorded between electric and traditional vehicles.

The price drop comes as automakers ramp up incentives to attract buyers. EV discounts jumped to 14.2% of the vehicle's sticker price in February, more than double the incentives offered on gas cars. Even Tesla, typically resistant to major discounts, saw its average price settle at $53,821. While that's up 3% from last year, it still represents a dramatic shift from the premium prices Tesla commanded just a few years ago.
