Electric Cars Outsell Gas Cars in EU for First Time

For the first time in automotive history, Europeans bought more electric cars than gas-powered ones in a single month. December 2025 saw 217,898 battery electric vehicles registered across the EU, edging past the 216,492 traditional petrol cars sold that same month.

The numbers tell a story of rapid transformation. Electric vehicle sales jumped 51% compared to December 2024, while gas car purchases fell 19% during the same period. What once seemed like a distant future is now unfolding on streets across Europe.

The shift wasn't limited to one or two wealthy nations. Germany led the charge with a 43% increase in EV registrations, while the Netherlands, Belgium, and France all posted double-digit growth. Together, these four countries accounted for nearly two-thirds of all new electric car registrations.

For the full year of 2025, electric vehicles captured 17.4% of the EU market, up from 13.6% the previous year. Nearly 1.9 million new battery-electric cars hit European roads in 2025. Meanwhile, traditional gas car sales dropped across every major market, with France seeing the steepest decline at 32%.

The transformation is happening faster than many predicted just a few years ago. Drivers are discovering that electric vehicles offer lower running costs, quieter rides, and zero tailpipe emissions. As charging infrastructure expands and vehicle prices become more competitive, the practical barriers that once held people back continue to fall.
