Electric Cars Outsell Petrol Vehicles for First Time in EU

History quietly happened in European car dealerships last month, and it signals a cleaner future for everyone.

December 2025 became the first month ever when Europeans bought more electric vehicles than traditional petrol cars. The numbers tell a powerful story: 217,898 new battery electric vehicles hit the roads across the European Union, claiming 22.6 percent of the market while petrol vehicles took 22.5 percent.

The shift happened faster than many expected. Electric vehicle sales jumped 51 percent compared to December 2024, while petrol car sales dropped 19.2 percent in the same period.

This milestone comes despite uncertainty about EU policy changes. The European Union recently modified its 2035 phase-out plan for petrol and diesel vehicles, yet drivers continue choosing electric anyway.

Chinese manufacturer BYD emerged as the breakout success story of 2025. The company saw annual sales skyrocket 268 percent, jumping from 50,912 vehicles in 2024 to 187,657 in 2025. European drivers are drawn to BYD's combination of affordability and advanced technology.

Meanwhile, Tesla experienced a challenging year with sales falling 26.9 percent across Europe. The American automaker sold 238,656 vehicles in 2025 compared to 326,525 the previous year, and its market share dropped from 4.1 percent to three percent by December.

Traditional automaker Volkswagen Group still leads overall European sales with 3.57 million registrations across all its brands. More than one in four cars sold in the EU came from Volkswagen, Skoda, Audi, Cupra, Seat or Porsche.

The Ripple Effect

This shift reaches far beyond car showrooms. Cleaner air in cities means healthier communities, especially for children and people with respiratory conditions. Lower emissions contribute to global climate goals that protect coastlines, farmland and water supplies.

The UK is joining the momentum with its Electric Car Grant, offering motorists up to £3,750 off vehicles priced at £37,000 or less. Already, 50,000 British drivers have taken advantage of the funding to make the switch.

Every electric vehicle on the road replaces thousands of trips powered by fossil fuels. As charging infrastructure expands and battery technology improves, the transition becomes easier for families weighing their options.
