Elephant Madhuri Recovers After Years of Mobility Problems

After more than 30 years living with worsening mobility problems, Madhuri the elephant is heading home to Maharashtra healthy and walking freely again.

Madhuri arrived at the Vantara animal care facility in Jamnagar, India, in 2025 with advanced arthritis, chronic foot rot, and severe difficulty moving. Years of standing on hard concrete surfaces and limited movement had taken a devastating toll on her joints and feet.

The elephant had spent decades at Nandani Math in Kolhapur, where restricted movement and concrete flooring contributed to joint stiffness and deteriorating health. Despite her condition, she was still being walked long distances during festivals and public events, often on hot asphalt.

At Vantara, a team of veterinarians, nutritionists, caregivers, and behavioral specialists developed a comprehensive treatment plan under the guidance of Anant Ambani. The approach combined medical care with physical rehabilitation, specialized foot treatments, proper nutrition, and most importantly, opportunities for natural movement.

Over the course of more than a year, Madhuri's condition steadily improved. The dedicated care addressed not just her immediate injuries but the underlying causes of her mobility problems.
