Emergency Training Saves 29-Year-Old Police Horse's Life
When retired police horse Dottie collapsed on icy ground and couldn't stand, specialized rescue training made the difference between panic and a successful save. The 29-year-old mare is alive today because her barn manager took a course she hoped never to use.
A 29-year-old retired police horse named Dottie is back on her feet thanks to a rescue training course that transformed a winter emergency into a coordinated success story.
On December 30, 2025, barn manager Tracey Abramovic found Dottie lying on frozen ground at Trinity Trotters, unable to rise. The beloved mare, already dealing with mobility challenges, was positioned in a way that made standing on the slippery surface impossible.
After 10 minutes of unsuccessful attempts to help Dottie stand, Tracey realized they needed a different approach. "The way she was laying down, I knew there was no way she was getting up," she explained.
That's when the Large Animal Emergency Rescue training from Equine Guelph kicked in. Instead of continuing with instinct and multiple helpers, Tracey remembered the safety protocols from the course and completely changed tactics.
The team paused, retrieved rescue straps they'd purchased after the training, and reorganized. What had been six or seven people working in chaos became a calm four-person operation with Tracey in command.

Using a tractor, proper rigging, and the structured approach they'd learned, the team safely lifted Dottie to her feet. "It was so much easier, far less stress," Tracey said.
When veterinarian Dr. Molson arrived expecting the worst, she found Dottie standing, stable, and acting normal. "She was so relieved," said Tracey. "It made us feel like we did something really amazing that day."
Why This Inspires
Tracey admits she sat through parts of the LAER course thinking she'd never use certain techniques. But when the moment came, the training transformed panic into confidence and possibly saved Dottie's life.
Her advice to other horse owners? "Definitely take the course! They're amazing tools to have." The difference between knowing what to do and guessing can mean everything in an emergency.
Dottie's rescue proves that preparation pays off when seconds count. Training we hope never to use can become the most valuable investment we ever make.
