Rescue Pit Bull Saves Dying Pug With Blood Donation

A 7-year-old pit bull who once limped into an Arizona shelter as an injured stray just became the hero who saved another rescue dog's life.

Rowlan, an American pit bull terrier at the Arizona Humane Society, donated blood in an emergency transfusion that saved Tilly, a 2-year-old pug who arrived at the shelter's trauma hospital in late May. Tilly was severely anemic, underweight, dehydrated, and largely unresponsive when veterinarians admitted her.

Without immediate intervention, she wouldn't survive the night. That's when the medical team turned to Rowlan, who had recovered enough from his own injuries to become an emergency donor.

The transfusion worked almost immediately. Tilly's condition began improving right after the procedure, giving her the boost she desperately needed to fight for her life.

Tilly continues her recovery under the care of one of the veterinarians who saved her life. She's gaining weight, getting stronger, and showing more personality every day.
