England and Wales Accept Digital ID for Age Checks in Pubs

Forget fumbling for your wallet at the bar. Starting Tuesday, customers across England and Wales can verify their age with a simple scan on their phones when buying alcohol.

The new law updates licensing rules to accept digital IDs as valid proof of age at pubs, restaurants, music venues, and festivals. Physical IDs remain perfectly acceptable, but now there's a modern alternative that fits how people already live their lives.

Here's what makes this system different. When you use a digital ID app like Yoti, you verify yourself each time through face scanning or entering a code. The app then generates a QR code that stays valid for just 30 seconds, making it nearly impossible for someone to borrow or steal your digital ID.

You won't need to hand over your name, address, or other personal details to prove you're old enough to buy a drink. The bartender only sees confirmation that you meet the age requirement.

The technology works offline, similar to contactless payments. The government has asked developers to make their apps work together so customers won't need multiple apps for different venues.

Businesses aren't required to invest in expensive new equipment. The system integrates with tablets most venues already own, and adoption remains completely voluntary for both customers and businesses.

Digital Government Minister Stephanie Peacock emphasized the privacy benefits. "This groundbreaking change in the law will mean you do not need to carry a physical ID, nor hand over sensitive personal information such as your name or address just to prove your age," she said.

The government plans to expand digital age verification beyond alcohol to tobacco and vaping products next.

While widespread adoption will take time, industry leaders see real promise. Allen Simpson, chief executive of UKHospitality, called it "a positive step" that provides "greater flexibility and convenience for customers and businesses."

The change follows years of testing digital ID in specific settings like cinema age checks. Now millions of age verifications that happen annually at licensed venues across England and Wales can happen more smoothly and securely.
