Environmental News Site Launches Solutions Journalism Desk

Environmental news typically drowns readers in doom, but one newsroom just decided to flip the script by showing what's actually working.

Mongabay, a global environmental news platform, launched a Solutions Desk focused on evidence-based reporting about successful conservation and climate efforts. The new team moves beyond catastrophe headlines to rigorously document which environmental responses actually work and which don't.

The shift comes from a sobering reality about reader behavior. "When people are offered only catastrophe, many disengage," says Mongabay founder Rhett Butler. Years of extinction and climate disaster stories have left audiences feeling paralyzed rather than empowered.

The desk builds on a core team of six journalists, plus reporters across regional bureaus worldwide. In 2024, Mongabay added its first dedicated solutions researcher, Marina Martinez, to verify scientific evidence and fact-check claims before publication.

This approach requires serious rigor. Solutions journalism means evaluating real outcomes, examining trade-offs, and identifying lessons others can learn from. The team assesses whether conservation approaches actually deliver results across different contexts and communities.

The Ripple Effect

Mongabay's solutions reporting has already changed how major players invest in the planet. Their agroforestry series explored how farmers worldwide use tree-based agriculture to fight food insecurity and deforestation.

Senior editor Erik Hoffner shared these articles with Microsoft leadership. The tech giant responded by including agroforestry in its carbon investment proposals, ultimately funding projects in Peru, Brazil, and Colombia in 2021.

The newsroom's reporting on Indigenous women's wildcat conservation in Peru supported community-led initiatives protecting endangered species. Their coverage of the biomass industry informed policy decisions and accountability measures across the sector.

Executive editor Willie Shubert sees the desk as essential fuel for environmental workers. "This community needs inspiration and insight from successful actions to address environmental degradation, and to learn from each other's triumphs and mistakes," he says.

The Solutions Desk joins ongoing Mongabay projects covering climate solutions, reforestation, sustainable fisheries, and emerging environmental policies. Each story undergoes the same scrutiny as traditional investigative journalism.

Butler emphasizes that hope must be earned through rigorous reporting, not manufactured through cheerleading. The desk will cover meaningful environmental gains with full independence and critical analysis.
