Equal AI Raises $30M to Answer Calls for Indians

Imagine getting 20 calls a week from insurance salespeople while you're just trying to live your life. That's reality for millions in India, where delivery drivers, scammers, and telemarketers flood phones daily.

Equal AI built a solution that answers calls so you don't have to. The app picks up unknown numbers, chats with the caller, and sends you a quick summary of what they want.

The startup just raised $30 million in Series B funding led by Prosus Ventures and Tomales Bay Capital. Since launching last year, the Android app has grown to more than a million monthly active users.

Here's how it works. When someone calls, the AI assistant answers and asks why they're calling. You see the reason pop up on your screen in real time, along with quick reply options like "Leave the delivery near the door."

You can also type custom messages for the AI to read back. Every conversation gets recorded and transcribed, so you can review it later if needed.

Founder Keshav Reddy saw the problem firsthand. "If you are buying car insurance, you might get 20 calls over a week, and that is hard to tackle for a human," he told TechCrunch.

The app handles something uniquely challenging about India: language mixing. Indians often blend English with their native language mid-sentence, and Equal AI supports over 10 languages to keep up.

The Ripple Effect

The app currently only screens unknown calls, but bigger changes are coming. Equal AI plans to let the assistant handle calls from known contacts too, plus make outbound calls on your behalf to book appointments or share your address with delivery drivers.

The startup is building an iOS version and working on a paid subscription tier with more features. They're doing it all through their own app rather than relying on platforms like WhatsApp, giving them full control over the experience.

Competition is heating up from Google, Apple, and India's popular Truecaller app. But investor Thiago Viana from Prosus Ventures believes Equal's deep understanding of local context gives it an edge.

The startup has now raised over $42 million total, betting that solving one problem really well creates the foundation for bigger things. Sometimes the best innovation isn't flashy; it's just giving people back their time and peace of mind.
