ER Nurse Saves Swimmer in Cardiac Arrest at Pool

An emergency room nurse turned a routine swim class into a lifesaving mission when a woman's heart stopped at a pool in Uiwang, South Korea.

Jeong Eun-ah was waiting for her swimming class to begin when she saw a woman in her 50s suddenly fall unconscious in the water. Other swimmers pulled the woman out immediately, but her heart had already stopped beating.

Jeong, who has spent five years working in the emergency room at Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital, knew every second counted. She began CPR right away, opening the woman's airway and using the pool's defibrillator to restore her heartbeat.

The woman's pulse returned before paramedics arrived to transport her to the hospital. She was treated in the same emergency room where Jeong works and made a complete recovery.

Years after the incident, the woman she saved made a special trip back to the hospital. She wanted to thank Jeong in person for giving her a second chance at life.

"Early responses in medical emergencies can determine the patient's prognosis, so I immediately conducted emergency measures to save a person's life," Jeong explained. Her training kicked in at exactly the right moment, in exactly the right place.

This story shows why public defibrillators and CPR training matter so much. When someone suffers cardiac arrest outside a hospital, their survival often depends on whether a trained bystander can step in before professional help arrives.

Jeong happened to be both trained and present, turning what could have been a tragedy into a celebration of life.
