Escalon Softball Wins First-Ever NorCal Playoff Game

The Escalon High School softball team just proved that history doesn't need a layoff to warm up.

The Cougars claimed their first-ever Northern California Regional playoff victory on Tuesday, squeaking past Alhambra 6-5 in a nail-biter that came down to the final out. After winning their section title just days earlier, the small-town team showed no rust as they took their winning streak on the road.

Freshman sensation Tenley Adams started the scoring early with a sacrifice fly, then sealed the win later with her arm. The University of California Riverside-bound AriannaVelasco delivered the knockout punch in the third inning with a bases-clearing triple that gave Escalon a comfortable 4-0 lead.

But comfortable didn't last long. Alhambra clawed back with two runs in the third, cutting the lead in half and making the Cougars sweat.

Adams responded like a veteran in the fifth inning, crushing a two-run homer to push the lead back to four runs. Then came the heart-stopping seventh inning that tested every nerve in the Escalon dugout.

With two outs and the game slipping away, Alhambra scored twice to pull within one run. Adams, pitching the complete game, forced a groundout to third base for the final out and sent the Cougars spilling onto the field in celebration.

The freshman phenom struck out six batters while driving in three runs at the plate. Senior Madison Babasa, headed to the University of Arizona next year, reached base multiple times and showed her speed on the basepaths.
