Essex Volunteers Still Bringing Hope to War-Torn Ukraine

Phil Billingham won't let the world forget Ukraine, even as headlines shift to other crises and donations dry up.

The Kelvedon businessman and his friends have made multiple trips from Essex to Ukraine's front lines, delivering medical evacuation vehicles and humanitarian supplies since Russia's 2022 invasion. In October, he'll make another run with charity Drive 2 Save Lives, this time bringing donated four-wheel-drive vehicles where they're needed most.

The journey isn't easy, but Billingham said witnessing the impact firsthand keeps him going. He travels with his wife Shannon Currie and friend David Crozier, and this October will bring along friend Tom Snowdon and his daughter Kate.

"People can feel helpless that what they're doing doesn't make a difference, but I think it does," Billingham told the BBC. The trio has seen donations transform into tangible help for Ukrainians living under siege.

Charities working in Ukraine confirm that support has dropped significantly since the initial invasion. Hope and Aid Direct reported declining donations in May, blaming Britain's cost-of-living crisis and competing international conflicts for donor fatigue.

Billingham understands the challenge. News cycles overflow with crises in Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, and Iran. Life gets busy, wallets get tight, and compassion gets stretched thin across an increasingly troubled world.

But Ukraine's war hasn't ended. Russia still controls roughly one-fifth of Ukrainian territory, primarily in eastern border regions. The need for medical vehicles, supplies, and humanitarian aid remains urgent.

Why This Inspires

What makes Billingham's work remarkable isn't just the delivery of supplies. It's his refusal to accept that people have stopped caring.

He's actively seeking donations of older Mitsubishi Shoguns or similar reliable vehicles, no matter their condition. "It can be old, it can have paint work only a mother would love," he explained. "But as long as it's solid and reliable, the Ukrainians can make use of it."

His practical approach turns everyday items into lifelines. That old SUV gathering dust in someone's driveway could become an ambulance on Ukraine's front lines. A trade-in vehicle could evacuate wounded soldiers or deliver food to besieged communities.

Billingham previously worked with Driving Ukraine, a charity founded in 2022 specifically to deliver medical evacuation vehicles and pick-up trucks to conflict zones. The model works because it cuts through bureaucracy and delivers help directly where it matters most.

The volunteers prove that individual action still counts in a world of overwhelming crises. Small donations compound into real change when committed people refuse to look away.
