Ethiopia Powers Regional Growth with 95% Renewable Energy

Ethiopia is proving that going green can power more than just homes. It can transform entire regions.

The East African nation now generates over 95 percent of its electricity from renewable sources, making it a clean energy powerhouse. That achievement is creating something even bigger: a web of economic opportunity connecting neighboring countries through shared power grids.

The European Union is betting big on this vision. Adrián Cano Guerrero, Program Officer for Trade and Economic Development at the EU Delegation to Ethiopia, told the Ethiopian News Agency that his organization is partnering with regional bodies to strengthen cross-border energy infrastructure.

"What we are aiming for is for energy generation to be a driving force of Ethiopia's growth and empowerment," Guerrero said. The EU is supporting electricity transmission projects both within Ethiopia and across its borders with neighbors.

Ethiopia already exports power to Kenya and Sudan. These sales generate vital revenue while building stronger economic ties between nations that have sometimes struggled with regional cooperation.

The strategy goes beyond moving electrons across borders. The EU is working with institutions like the African Union, IGAD, and the Eastern Africa Power Pool to create integrated systems for transport, logistics, and trade facilitation.

Cross-border energy connections create natural pathways for deeper economic integration. When countries share power grids, they share stakes in each other's stability and prosperity.

The approach addresses a critical challenge across Africa, where unreliable electricity has long held back economic development. By pooling renewable resources and sharing transmission infrastructure, countries can leapfrog the fossil fuel era while building regional cooperation.

This isn't just about keeping the lights on. Reliable, affordable electricity attracts investment, powers manufacturing, and creates jobs. When Ethiopia sells clean energy to neighbors, it demonstrates how countries can trade their way toward mutual prosperity instead of competing for scarce resources.

The renewable focus matters too. While much of the world debates how to transition away from coal and gas, Ethiopia and its neighbors are building their energy future on water, wind, and sun from the start.
