
Ethiopian Farmers See 272% Crop Boost With New Methods

Farmers in Ethiopia's Jimma Zone are harvesting crops they never thought possible, with maize yields jumping 272% and wheat up 89% using new climate-smart farming methods.
The transformation comes through a partnership between the African Development Bank, Japan, and the Sasakawa Africa Association. Together, they're teaching over 91,000 Ethiopian farmers how to work with nature instead of against it.
In Seka Chekorsa Woreda, farmers are testing improved seed varieties alongside soil-healing practices like composting with worms, biochar fertilizers, and reduced plowing. The results speak louder than any PowerPoint presentation: maize yields climbed from 1,222 kilograms per hectare to 4,541.8 kilograms, while wheat jumped from 1,293 to 2,443.7 kilograms.
Nearly 30,000 women are among the farmers learning these techniques. They're not just growing more food but also restoring degraded soils that have been losing fertility for years.
The project brings cutting-edge technology to small farms through an AI-powered system called e-kakashi. The digital tool analyzes soil conditions, weather patterns, and crop health to help farmers make smarter decisions about planting, watering, and fertilizing.

Japan has contributed over $50 million to support the initiative through a trust fund managed by the African Development Bank. The money supports farmer training, research, and the introduction of climate-resilient crop varieties that can withstand drought and flooding.
The program tackles problems Ethiopian farmers face every day: acidic soil, unpredictable weather, pests, and limited access to quality seeds and fertilizer. By addressing these challenges together rather than one at a time, the project creates lasting change.
African Development Bank representatives recently visited farms in Jimma to see the progress firsthand. They toured demonstration plots, met with farmers using the new techniques, and visited a biochar production facility at Jimma University where organic waste becomes valuable soil amendment.
