Ethiopian Shepherd Becomes Australia's Marathon Champion

The boy who once thought people lived inside television screens now holds his adopted country's marathon record.

Haftu Strintzos grew up 2,300 meters above sea level in eastern Tigray, Ethiopia, standing barefoot in fields from dawn to dusk as a shepherd. His home was a rock hut where animals slept beside the family, and a mobile phone was his only window to the world beyond the mountains.

He lost both parents by age six and lived with his grandmother, aunt, and cousins in a community without electricity or running water. Then Maria Strintzos, a Greek Australian aid worker, met eight-year-old Haftu during one of his barefoot walks guiding his nearly blind grandmother down from the mountains.

Something about the quiet, serious boy who carried the weight of responsibility so young moved Maria deeply. After decades of famine relief and humanitarian work across the Horn of Africa, she asked Haftu if he'd like to be her son.

In 2011, Haftu migrated to Melbourne, traveling more than 12,000 kilometers from everything he knew. The culture shock hit hard: new foods, subtle racism, and motion sickness so severe he could only ride in cars by staring straight at the road ahead.

But fascinated by the electricity he'd never had as a child, Haftu excelled. He dismantled and rebuilt toy cars to understand their motors, eventually earning a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from Villanova University in the United States.

A PE teacher spotted his running talent during a school cross-country race. Haftu didn't know running was even a profession, having grown up in mountains where athletic careers seemed impossible.

Now 27, he speaks five languages and recently shattered Australia's men's marathon record. He calls his experience living a "double life," from shepherd to engineer to national record holder.

He took nothing for granted, turning fascination with electricity into academic achievement and natural running ability into athletic excellence.
