Ethiopia's Ethio Telecom Plants 250K Trees in Green Push

When a phone company decides to fight climate change, the results can be stunning. Ethio Telecom just launched its eighth annual tree-planting campaign across Ethiopia, mobilizing 3,500 employees and partners to plant 250,000 seedlings in communities from the capital's Entoto area to all 18 administrative regions.

The initiative is more than feel-good optics. Over the past seven years, the state-owned telecom has planted 4.6 million trees across 889 locations nationwide, creating temporary employment for nearly 25,000 citizens in the process.

What makes this effort special is its success rate. While many corporate tree-planting campaigns struggle with saplings that never mature, Ethio Telecom has achieved an 82.7% survival rate by investing in ongoing care and protection. The company has committed $42.4 million this year alone, bringing its total seven-year environmental investment to nearly $160 million.

The green mission extends beyond planting. Ethio Telecom has transformed its operations with 190 solar-powered cell towers, 867 hybrid power systems, and over 1,100 lithium battery units that have cut diesel generator use by 40%. The company now runs on 39.72 megawatts of solar capacity, drastically reducing its carbon footprint while keeping Ethiopians connected.

The telecom giant also operates nine ultra-fast electric vehicle charging stations across the country. Since launching in February 2025, these stations have charged over 481,000 electric vehicles, preventing 15.4 million kilograms of CO2 emissions—equivalent to the work of more than 76,000 trees.

The Ripple Effect

Ethio Telecom's environmental leadership is reshaping how businesses operate in East Africa. The company won the "Most Admired Ethiopian Brand Doing Good for Society and the Environment" award two years running, plus the 2025 Ethiopian Green Award from the nation's Environmental Protection Authority.

The tree-planting program directly supports Ethiopia's national "Planting Hope" campaign while creating sustainable livelihoods in rural communities. Each planting season generates roughly 2,000 jobs for citizens who nurture seedlings through their critical early months, ensuring the impressive survival rates continue.
